Summer Movies at Cal Anderson Park

In one of my all-time favorite curation projects, I worked to create and build an audience for Three Dollar Bill Cinema’s popular outdoor movie series at Cal Anderson Park, which began in 2007. The first two years we screened rare 16mm film prints, including Creature from the Black Lagoon in 3D. The setup was a hassle but nobody else was doing anything like it. Even after we switched to DVD/digital, I would program cult favorite films you’d be unlikely to see elsewhere such as The Apple or Frogs, and secure offbeat classics that never made it to DVD, from 1982’s Little Darlings to The Legend of Billie Jean. The people have spoken, as these events have drawn massive and adoring audiences of over 1,000 people per night.
