We interrupt this movie to bring you a movie
Even when I’m not helping to create a title sequence, trailer, TV spot or tagline for a movie, I’m probably watching one anyway. But it’s not all popcorn and matinee prices, because I’m almost always looking at a movie for purposes of business and (hopefully) pleasure.
Tomorrow I’m heading down to Frameline in San Francisco for five days and nights of movies, movies, and more movies. Plus a party or two. I’ll be there in my official capacity as Lead Programmer for Three Dollar Bill Cinema, looking at shorts programs and films to evaluate for inclusion in the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, Oct. 16-25.
I’ve been working with Three Dollar Bill Cinema for a few years now. It’s a lot of work but a ton of fun. What started 14 years ago with the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival has grown into a year-round non-profit organization with a myriad of events, programs, and support for filmmakers. In addition to programming, I’m also responsible for creating marketing & publicity materials with my partner-in-everything, Corianton Hale. Never a dull moment, never a day off. We earned a Key Art Award nomination for last year’s poster for the SLGFF, which won an award & appearance in PRINT Magazine, so all the overtime is at least being recognized.
You might think I’d want to fill my ‘off time’ with something completely outside of the entertainment industry. You might especially think this after working so many late nights, weekends and “vacations” like I do. But movies are what I love and what I know. Film & marketing have been part of my career since the beginning, and I can’t imagine ever not having some involvement with the two, preferably at the same time.
But I do have a back-up plan. Should they ever stop making movies, I figure I’ll just go to my second-choice career: taking a trained squirrel around to trade shows.
